The Mulsanne Turbo of 1982 marked a significant revival for the Bentley marque, earning the nickname "the return of the Blower Bentley" from motoring magazines. This resurgence continued with the introduction of the Turbo R in 1985, which brought substantial improvements to handling and roadholding. This model became a major success, remaining in production for nine years and solidifying Bentley's reputation for high-performance luxury vehicles.
Unique Appeal of the Turbo R
The Bentley Turbo R offered a unique combination of power and luxury. With acceleration that could rival exotic Italian sports cars and spacious, luxurious accommodation for four people, the Turbo R carved out a distinctive identity for Bentley. The 298bhp V8 engine, carried over from the Mulsanne Turbo, was complemented by a transformed chassis specification. Engineering Director Mike Dunn directed his team to increase roll stiffness by 50%, resulting in new anti-roll bars that were 100% stiffer at the front and 60% stiffer at the rear. Firmer shock absorbers and a Panhard rod in the rear suspension sub-frame further enhanced lateral stiffness. The use of cast alloy Ronal wheels with Pirelli P7 tyres contributed to a reduction in unsprung weight. Although it was suggested that the 'R' in Turbo R stood for 'Roadholding', this was never officially confirmed.
High-Speed Testing and Aerodynamic Enhancements
During high-speed testing at the Pirelli Nardo test track, engineers faced challenges with aerodynamic stability, an expected issue for a Bentley with 50% more power than the naturally aspirated Bentley Eight. These issues were addressed by incorporating a deeper front air dam, which reduced drag by 7% and lift by 15% at speed. The Turbo R's success was evident, with a nine-month waiting list reflecting Bentley's overdue renaissance as a high-performance marque. A total of 4,111 units were produced during its nine-year production run.

The Heritage Collection’s Turbo R is a distinguished 1991 model in Brooklands Green with a yellow coachline. The interior is luxuriously appointed with Magnolia hide, Spruce piping, and Burr Walnut veneer. This model's specification includes anti-lock brakes and fuel injection, both introduced in 1987, as well as slimmer sports seats and a higher final drive ratio. It joined the Heritage Collection in 2021, representing a key piece of Bentley's storied history.
