Artist Ding Yi Individualises Taycan Turbo S with His Own Artwork
For over three decades, Ding Yi has dedicated his artistic endeavors to a single motif: crosses. His abstract paintings, filled with this symbol in various forms, colors, and expressions, are displayed in prestigious museums, galleries, and private collections worldwide. Now, his artwork has transcended the traditional canvas and found a new form – a Porsche Taycan Turbo S. Through the Porsche Sonderwunsch programme, an extraordinary collaboration has transformed this sports saloon into a unique piece of moving art, featuring elements from Ding Yi's painting "Appearance of Crosses 2022-2".
Alexander Fabig, Vice President of Individualisation and Classic at Porsche, expressed the complexity of the project: "What Ding Yi asked of us was the most complex paintwork that Porsche has ever executed. The perfect reproduction of Ding Yi’s picture on the body sections took many more times longer than the painting process for a series production car." The Sonderwunsch programme, which translates to "special request," allows customers to personalize their cars to the highest degree. Ding Yi was deeply involved in this process, collaborating closely with Porsche designers and developers.
The base color chosen for the Taycan Turbo S was 914Olympblue from the "Paint to Sample" programme. The details of Ding Yi’s painting adorn the car's bonnet, rear spoiler, and exterior mirror housings. Each color in the artwork was meticulously painted on individually, using special masking foils, followed by two coats of clear lacquer for protection.
Michael Kirsch, President and CEO of Porsche China, highlighted the significance of the collaboration: "Working with Ding Yi was an extraordinary experience. Inside the Taycan Turbo S, the artwork continues to impress. Elements of "Appearance of Crosses 2022-2" are featured on the trim of the front and rear doors, the dashboard, and around the front cup holders. Despite the different materials, the colors maintain uniformity through a special silkscreen printing technique. This meticulous process ensures that passengers feel immersed in the artwork, as if the painting envelops the entire interior.
