Aston Martin Valkyrie: The Ultimate Hypercar Takes on Le Mans

Aston Martin has embarked on an exhilarating new chapter in its storied competition history with the debut of the Valkyrie hypercar, a road-bred racer poised to dominate endurance motorsport. This remarkable machine not only signifies the brand’s triumphant return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans but also underscores Aston Martin’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of performance and innovation.

The Valkyrie, the only competitor in its class derived from a road-legal hypercar, is the first racing machine constructed to FIA’s ‘Hypercar’ regulations set to compete in both the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the US-based IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The Valkyrie will make its highly anticipated world competition debut at the 2025 WEC season opener in Qatar on February 28th, with two entries fielded by the works Aston Martin THOR Team.

A Bold Step for Aston Martin

Adrian Hallmark, CEO of Aston Martin Lagonda, describes the Valkyrie’s racing debut as a monumental achievement: “Returning to Le Mans to fight for overall victory is at the core of our brand values. The Valkyrie embodies the essence of Aston Martin’s sporting heritage, being the only hypercar born from the road and designed to challenge at the highest level of sports car racing.”

The team’s all-British lineup for Le Mans includes Harry Tincknell, a previous class winner at the prestigious endurance race, joined by rising star Tom Gamble in the #007 Valkyrie. Meanwhile, the #009 car will be piloted by three-time FIA GT World Champion Marco Sørensen and seasoned endurance driver Alex Riberas.

In IMSA, the single Aston Martin THOR Team entry will be driven by Ross Gunn and Roman De Angelis, both of whom will also join the WEC squad for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Gunn, Tincknell, and Gamble will complete an all-British lineup for the legendary event in June.

From Road to Race: Engineering Excellence

What sets the Aston Martin Valkyrie apart is its unique connection to the road-going version, a hypercar revered for its exceptional performance and engineering prowess. Developed by Aston Martin Performance Technologies and THOR, the Valkyrie’s DNA remains largely intact as it transitions from road to track.

Powered by a Cosworth-built 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12, the Valkyrie in its road-going form delivers over 1,000 horsepower and revs up to an astonishing 11,000 rpm. For endurance racing, the power unit has been adapted to meet the Hypercar class performance regulations, ensuring reliability and efficiency over grueling long-distance competitions. The FIA’s Hypercar regulations limit power output to 680 bhp, enabling Aston Martin engineers to fine-tune the torque curve and improve fuel efficiency while retaining the visceral performance the Valkyrie is known for.

Beyond power, aerodynamics play a critical role in the Valkyrie’s racing evolution. The design, spearheaded by Aston Martin Chief Creative Officer Marek Reichman and legendary engineer Adrian Newey, ensures that the car maintains its cutting-edge aerodynamics while adhering to competition-specific regulations. Modifications include quick-change bodywork, a high-speed pneumatic jack system, and an optimized driver cockpit for improved visibility and safety.
