Audi Standardizes Model Names Globally for Enhanced Clarity

Audi is taking a major step in improving customer clarity and global consistency by standardizing its model naming system. Moving forward, the alphanumeric format of Audi's nomenclature will provide a clearer classification of each model based on size and positioning rather than powertrain type. This shift marks a departure from the previous system, which distinguished between combustion-engine and electric vehicles using odd and even numbers.

According to Marco Schubert, Member of the Board of Management for Sales and Marketing at AUDI AG, “This decision is the result of intensive discussions and also follows the wishes of our customers as well as feedback from our international dealers. Our nomenclature now provides all customers worldwide with an intuitive orientation in our portfolio.”

How Audi's New Naming System Works

The updated naming convention simplifies Audi’s lineup while ensuring a globally unified structure. Here’s how the system works:

  • Letters and Numbers:
    • The letters A and Q will continue to represent low-floor (sedan/wagon) and high-floor (SUV/crossover) vehicles, respectively.
    • The numbers (ranging from 1 to 8) will now indicate size and positioning, regardless of the type of powertrain.
  • Model Differentiation:
    • Audi will now differentiate models based on body styles, such as Avant, Sedan, or Sportback.
    • Powertrain types will be identified using existing designations, including TFSI (petrol), TDI (diesel), TFSI e (plug-in hybrid), and e-tron (fully electric).

This means that, for example, the Audi A6 Avant TFSI (a petrol-powered model) will be clearly distinguished from the Audi A6 Avant e-tron (its all-electric counterpart) while maintaining consistency in naming.

The First Model Under the New Naming Structure

The first new model to adopt this standardized nomenclature will be the Audi A6, a key player in the brand’s full-size segment. Audi will reveal the next-generation combustion-engine A6 globally on March 4, 2025. This model will coexist with the already announced A6 Avant e-tron, allowing customers to easily recognize the difference in powertrains while maintaining a unified model structure.

What This Means for Audi Buyers in the UAE

For customers in the UAE, this updated naming system simplifies the car-buying experience. Whether purchasing a new or used Audi in Dubai, buyers can now quickly identify a model’s segment and size without confusion over powertrain types. With Audi’s growing lineup of sedans, SUVs, and electric vehicles, this clarity will help customers make more informed decisions.
