What is eFuel?
eFuel, or electric fuel, is a fully synthetic fuel that is produced using renewable energy. Developed by Highly Innovative Fuels (HIF) Global, with backing from Porsche, eFuel is created at the Haru Oni pilot plant in Chile. The process involves capturing biogenic CO2 from a brewing process, combining it with hydrogen produced from water electrolysis, and refining it into methanol that can be converted to gasoline. For the Continental GT Speed drive, Bentley used a blend called R75, made up of 75% eFuel and 25% ordinary gasoline, which resulted in significantly reduced tailpipe emissions compared to traditional fuels.
This innovative fuel not only powers existing combustion engines without the need for modifications, but it also represents a major step forward in reducing CO2 emissions throughout the well-to-wheels process. The fuel was used to power both the Bentley fleet and the support vehicles, contributing to a 93% reduction in CO2 vehicle emissions during the event compared to previous drives.
