BMW Pioneers Autonomous Driving with Level 2 and Level 3 Combination

June 25, 2024

BMW has marked a significant milestone in the realm of autonomous driving. The renowned car manufacturer has become the first in the world to receive approval for the combination of a Level 2 driving assistance system and a Level 3 system in the same vehicle. This groundbreaking innovation is now available in the new BMW 7 Series, offering a unique blend of advanced driving technologies that promise enhanced comfort and safety on the road.

BMW Highway Assistant (Level 2): Enhanced Comfort on Long Journeys

The BMW Highway Assistant, a Level 2 driving assistance system, is designed to significantly enhance comfort during long-distance journeys. Capable of operating at speeds up to 130 km/h (81 mph), this feature allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel for extended periods on motorways with structurally separated carriageways. The system includes the Active Lane Change Assistant, enabling the vehicle to make lane changes autonomously, adjusting the speed as required and allowing the driver to confirm lane changes by simply looking in the exterior mirror.

BMW Personal Pilot L3 (Level 3): Autonomous Driving in Traffic Jams

The BMW Personal Pilot L3, a Level 3 driving assistance system, takes autonomous driving to the next level by allowing drivers to fully delegate the task of driving to the car under specific conditions, such as in traffic jams on motorways, at speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph). This system enables drivers to engage in other in-car activities like making phone calls, reading, writing messages, working, or streaming videos while the car manages the driving. However, the driver must be prepared to reassume control when prompted by the car, such as in the presence of roadworks.

A Milestone in Automotive Innovation

Combining these advanced driving assistance systems within a single vehicle represents a significant advancement in the automotive industry. The new BMW 7 Series offers a comprehensive set of functionalities that provide a more comfortable and relaxing driving experience over both short and long journeys. Dr. Mihiar Ayoubi, Senior Vice President Driving Experience BMW Group, stated, “We are setting new standards in the automotive industry by combining both technologies in the new BMW 7 Series. In the process, we are underlining our commitment to offering our customers a safe, comfortable and innovative driving experience.”

Availability and Pricing

The BMW Highway Assistant and Driving Assistant Professional are included in the optional BMW Personal Pilot L3 package, available exclusively in Germany for €6,000 (incl. VAT). Additionally, drivers of cars equipped with the optional BMW Personal Pilot L3 that have already been delivered can add the BMW Highway Assistant to its range of functions free of charge from August 2024.
