TWG Motorsports and GM: Cadillac's Formula 1 Power Unit Venture Led by Russ O’Blenes
TWG Motorsports and General Motors have taken a significant step toward revolutionizing their motorsports portfolio by forming GM Performance Power Units LLC. This new company will position Cadillac as a "full works" Formula 1 team, manufacturing both vehicles and power units by the end of the decade. With a planned debut of Cadillac’s proprietary power units in 2026, this initiative underscores GM’s dedication to pushing technological boundaries in motorsport.
Russ O’Blenes Appointed CEO
Leading this groundbreaking venture is Russ O’Blenes, a seasoned expert with over 30 years of experience in motor racing engineering. O’Blenes’ impressive career includes developing powertrains for championship-winning teams and leading the GM Motorsports Propulsion and Performance team. Notably, he has been instrumental in hybrid engine innovations for Cadillac’s IMSA series and the Corvette C8.R.
Dan Towriss, CEO of TWG Motorsports, expressed confidence in O’Blenes, emphasizing his technical expertise and leadership. “Together with Team Principal Graeme Lowdon, Russ will guide us toward setting new standards of performance and innovation in Formula 1,” Towriss stated.
GM’s Formula 1 Vision
Development of Cadillac’s Formula 1 prototype engine technology is already in progress. The initiative leverages GM's extensive knowledge of electrification, sustainable fuels, and high-efficiency internal combustion engines. The new GM PPU facility, to be located near the Charlotte Technical Center, will play a pivotal role in advancing Cadillac’s F1 ambitions.
Mark Reuss, GM President, highlighted the global impact of this endeavor: “In F1, we’re going to demonstrate GM’s engineering capabilities on an international stage, and Russ is the ideal leader for this mission.”
While GM's custom power units are under development, Cadillac will initially utilize Ferrari engines for the F1 team until GM's systems receive racing approval.
Cadillac: A Legacy of Innovation
This venture aligns with Cadillac's reputation for engineering excellence and cutting-edge design. Whether in championship motorsports or luxury consumer vehicles, Cadillac has consistently delivered high-performance innovations. The move to Formula 1 further reinforces its position as a leader in global automotive technology.
