The all-new Mustang GTD takes performance to an unprecedented level, showcasing a race-ready suspension system that combines cutting-edge technology with the aesthetic appeal of high-performance racing jewellery. According to Jim Owens, Mustang GTD's marketing manager, “The rear suspension is designed for purpose, but it’s also just a beautiful thing to look at.” This innovation allows owners to admire the blue and gold accents on the dampers without needing to remove any tech panels.
The suspension window, a polycarbonate piece measuring approximately 60 cm wide by 25 cm tall with a scratch-resistant coating, reveals the engineering marvel behind Mustang GTD's performance. This feature puts the craftsmanship of Ford’s engineering team on display, allowing passengers to watch the suspension in action.
Race-Proven Technology
The Mustang GTD integrates race-proven technology such as active aerodynamics, a carbon fibre body, magnesium wheels, and a rear transaxle. These features are key to making the Mustang GTD the most track-capable production Mustang ever. According to Greg Goodall, Mustang GTD Chief Program Engineer, “To meet the aggressive lap time targets we set, we looked to motorsports for that inspiration to do something really advanced.”
The inboard rear suspension of the Mustang GTD, where dampers and springs sit low and between the rear wheels rather than in line and above them, highlights Ford’s commitment to bringing track technology to the road. This system, supported by a strong and stiff motorsport-style tubular subframe, underscores the Mustang GTD’s track-derived DNA. Multimatic’s Adaptive Spool Valve (ASV) dampers, which can adjust from their softest to firmest settings in just 15 milliseconds, enhance this technology.
Adaptive Damping for Optimal Performance
Multimatic’s proprietary ASV dampers adapt based on drive mode, road surface, and driver inputs, optimizing the Michelin tyres’ contact with the road. Scott Keefer, vice president of Multimatic engineering, explains, “Adaptive damping allows more flexibility in absolute ride performance compared to a passive damper. Our system is a double win in that adjustments feel very analogue, very natural in terms of motion control.”
Each damper features two springs. On the street, they work together for a comfortable ride. In Track mode, the system hydraulically compresses one of the springs, nearly doubling the spring rate and lowering the vehicle by approximately 40 mm to maximize track performance. This setup improves both mechanical and aerodynamic grip, ensuring the tyres maintain broad contact with the road during high-speed manoeuvres.
The Mustang GTD’s advanced suspension system will be put to the test at prestigious racing events, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 24 Hours of Spa, and the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The car will also undergo summer testing in Europe, culminating in an attempt to achieve a sub-seven-minute lap at Germany’s Nürburgring Nordschleife.
