Nissan has unveiled its strategic roadmap to roll out autonomous-drive mobility services in Japan, a crucial step towards realizing its long-term vision, Nissan Ambition 2030. This ambitious endeavor aims to address pressing transportation challenges faced by local communities in Japan, including driver shortages resulting from an ageing population. By providing innovative mobility solutions, Nissan seeks to facilitate seamless movement and enhance accessibility for all.
The groundwork for this initiative was laid through extensive testing of mobility service business models both domestically and internationally since 2017. Notable test areas include the Minato Mirai district of Yokohama and Namie town in Fukushima Prefecture, where the Namie Smart Mobility service has been operational since 2021. Beyond Japan, Nissan has conducted trials of autonomous-drive mobility services in locations like London, supported by the UK government.
Building on this experience, Nissan plans to launch autonomous-drive mobility services by fiscal year 2027, in collaboration with various stakeholders such as local authorities and transport operators. Initial trials will commence in the Minato Mirai area in fiscal year 2024, followed by a phased expansion in subsequent years. Throughout these trials, the level of autonomous driving capability will be incrementally enhanced while evaluating customer feedback, ultimately aiming to offer fully driverless services.
The proposed timeline for implementation is as follows:
Fiscal year 2024:
Conduct driving tests in the Minato Mirai area of Yokohama utilizing autonomous driving vehicles based on the Serena minivan.
Fiscal years 2025 to 2026:
Demonstrate service capabilities in the Yokohama area, encompassing Minato Mirai, Sakuragi-cho, and Kannai, deploying a fleet of 20 vehicles with a driver on board.
Fiscal year 2027:
Target commencement of services in three to four municipalities, including rural areas, deploying multiple vehicles. Ongoing discussions with numerous municipalities are underway to facilitate this rollout.
This initiative will be closely coordinated with relevant governmental bodies, including the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. Collaboration at the Level 4 Mobility Acceleration Committee, organized by these ministries, will drive efforts to realize innovative autonomous mobility services.
Nissan's commitment to advancing autonomous-drive mobility services underscores its dedication to shaping the future of transportation. By harnessing cutting-edge technology and collaborative partnerships, Nissan aims to revolutionize mobility and enrich the lives of communities across Japan. Stay tuned for further updates on this groundbreaking initiative.
