Patrol Units for Heavy Vehicles Monitoring: Enhancing Road Safety in Dubai

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Police General Headquarters have launched Joint Patrol Units dedicated to monitoring and enforcing technical compliance among heavy vehicles on Dubai's roads. This initiative aims to enhance traffic safety by conducting thorough inspections and expanding coverage across six major roads: Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Emirates Road, Al Khail Road, Ras Al Khor Road, Al Maktoum Airport Road, and Dubai-Al Ain Road.

Enhancing Traffic Safety Through Strategic Collaboration

His Excellency Major General Abdullah Ali Al Ghaithi, Assistant Commandant for Operations Affairs at Dubai Police, highlighted the significance of the Joint Patrol Units in bolstering traffic safety across the emirate. “The launch of these units is a key component of the ongoing collaboration between Dubai Police and the RTA to implement the 5-Year Executive Plan for the Traffic Safety Strategy,” stated Major General Al Ghaithi. This strategy emphasizes four key areas: traffic monitoring and enforcement, road and vehicle engineering, traffic awareness, and the development of systems and management.

The Joint Patrol Units are designed to enforce compliance with traffic laws, ensure proper mechanical maintenance of heavy vehicles, and prevent serious accidents by managing truck movements safely. Major General Al Ghaithi urged heavy vehicle drivers in Dubai to adhere to traffic laws, follow speed limits, maintain safe distances, conduct regular vehicle inspections, take breaks on long journeys, avoid distractions, and ensure their tyres are in good condition.

RTA and Dubai Police Partnership for Safer Roads

Hussain Al Banna, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency at the RTA, underscored the importance of the partnership between the RTA and Dubai Police in monitoring heavy vehicles on highways to ensure compliance with technical and safety standards. "Our inspections will focus on key aspects, including tyre safety, availability of safety equipment, lighting efficiency, overloading, protruding cargo, and driving without a valid license or permit," Al Banna explained.

Fines will be issued by police officers if any violations are detected that compromise the safety of vehicles, roads, or road users. This coordinated approach reflects the commitment of both RTA and Dubai Police to achieving Dubai’s traffic safety strategy goals, with a long-term vision of ‘Zero Fatalities’ on the roads.

Al Banna further emphasized the impact of the Joint Patrol Units on reducing traffic-related fatalities, which have decreased by 93% between 2007 and 2023. The initiative also aims to enhance traffic awareness among truck drivers and reduce truck-related incidents, ultimately ensuring the highest levels of safety and security for all road users in Dubai.

Supporting Dubai's Logistics Sector

The RTA is committed to enhancing the competitiveness of Dubai's land logistics sector, positioning the city as a major logistics hub in the region. With over 73,861 registered heavy vehicles, the RTA focuses on improving business practices, simplifying regulations, modernizing fleets with zero-emission vehicles, and supporting SMEs in the sector. Additionally, efforts are being made to improve driver behavior and vehicle performance, as well as to accelerate the adoption of modern transport technologies.

As part of these initiatives, the RTA has recently completed 10 truck rest stops out of 16 planned, in collaboration with ADNOC. These rest stops are strategically located along major routes frequented by trucks, including Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Emirates Road, Dubai-Hatta Road, Dubai-Al Ain Road, Jebel Ali-Lehbab Road, and Al Awir Road. Each rest stop spans between 5,000 and 10,000 square meters and provides facilities such as prayer rooms, diesel refueling stations, and rest areas for drivers, accommodating 30 to 45 trucks or heavy vehicles.

Ensuring Compliance and Safety for Heavy Vehicles in Dubai

The Joint Patrol Units for Heavy Vehicles Monitoring are a testament to Dubai's commitment to road safety and the effective management of heavy vehicle movements. By enforcing compliance with safety standards and providing dedicated rest stops, Dubai aims to reduce accidents and enhance the overall safety of its road networks. For those in Dubai seeking reliable heavy vehicles, these initiatives also contribute to the availability of safer, well-maintained used vehicles in the market.
