Porsche Plans a Trio of Powertrains for the Cayenne Into the Next Decade

Porsche is setting the stage for the future with the fourth generation of its iconic Cayenne SUV, which will be all-electric. The first camouflaged prototypes are already undergoing rigorous testing. Simultaneously, Porsche is continuing to develop powerful hybrid and combustion engine models, ensuring that the Cayenne will offer three powertrain variants worldwide well into the next decade.

For over 20 years, the Cayenne has balanced Porsche's signature driving performance with excellent everyday comfort and off-road capabilities. The future models will maintain these qualities. “The Cayenne has always defined the sports car in its segment. In the middle of the decade, the fourth generation will set standards as an electric SUV,” says Blume, CEO of Porsche AG. Customers will still have the choice of efficient combustion and hybrid models alongside the new electric version. The third generation of the Cayenne, recently updated, will continue to be available.

The current generation, which received significant upgrades last year, will undergo further development with a focus on powertrains. Porsche is investing heavily to improve the efficiency of the V8 engine developed in-house at the Zuffenhausen engine plant. These advancements will ensure the twin-turbo engine meets future legislative requirements.

Porsche's commitment to electromobility is evident. “Our product strategy could enable us to deliver more than 80 percent of our new cars fully electrified by 2030, depending on customer demand and regional development of electromobility,” says Blume. The fourth-generation Cayenne, completely redesigned, aims to support this shift significantly.

The all-electric Cayenne will be built on an advanced version of the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) with 800-volt architecture. “The flexibility of the PPE architecture allows us to integrate the latest technology in high-voltage systems, powertrain, and chassis. We are leveraging electrification to elevate the Cayenne to a new level in driving performance,” says Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board for Research and Development at Porsche AG. The development targets include high-capacity charging, high efficiency, and enhanced comfort and usability.

The all-electric Cayenne's development is now in the real-world testing phase, following extensive digital development and initial test drives at the Weissach Development Centre. “The real-world testing has begun, marking a crucial milestone,” says Michael Schätzle, Vice President Product Line Cayenne. By its launch, prototypes will have completed millions of test kilometres worldwide, under extreme conditions. “This ensures the durability and reliability of the hardware, software, and all functions according to our high standards,” Schätzle adds.

As Porsche plans for the future, the Cayenne will continue to offer its signature blend of performance, comfort, and versatility. Whether opting for the innovative electric model or the enhanced hybrid and combustion versions, drivers will experience the next level of automotive excellence.
