Reliving Racing Glory: BMW M1 Group 4 Returns to Le Mans Classic

January 25, 2024
In a thrilling homage to motorsport history, BMW Group Classic is set to make a triumphant return to the iconic Le Mans Classic in 2023, marking their comeback to the renowned circuit since 2014. The spotlight of this year's event shines on the legendary BMW M1 Group 4, adorned in the iconic "Münchener Wirtshaus" livery. Piloted by the original trio of drivers from the 1981 24 Hours of Le Mans – HRH Prince Leopold of Bavaria, Christian Danner, and Peter Oberndorfer – the team commenced their journey at the historic Spatenhaus an der Oper restaurant in Munich, recreating a nostalgic pre-race public photo call from 1981.

"I'm really looking forward to driving the BMW M1 Group 4 in 'Münchener Wirtshaus' livery at Le Mans again after 42 years," expressed HRH Prince Leopold of Bavaria. This extraordinary reunion encapsulates the spirit of the past, symbolizing a remarkable journey back in time.

The decision to participate in the Le Mans Classic aligns with multiple celebrations, including the centenary of the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 50th anniversary of BMW France, and the 80th birthday of HRH Prince Leopold of Bavaria on 21 June. In addition to fielding the BMW M1 Group 4 in the Plateau 6 category, BMW Group Classic will curate an exhibition at the Musée des 24 Heures du Mans, featuring Le Mans racing icons such as the BMW V12 LMR, the first-ever BMW Art Car by Alexander Calder, and the BMW M3 GT2 Art Car by Jeff Koons. As the Le Mans Classic unfolds, spectators can expect a captivating display of nearly 20 privately entered historic BMW racers, further enriching the historic tapestry of this prestigious event.
