New Midsize Platform
Rivian’s all-new midsize vehicle platform consolidates and eliminates parts through intelligent design, including high-pressure die castings and a structural battery unit. This platform supports multiple motor variants—Single-Motor (RWD), Dual-Motor (AWD), and Tri-Motor (two motors in the rear and one in front)—with the quickest configuration achieving 0-60 mph in under 3 seconds.
Enhanced Charging and Autonomous Capabilities
Both models will feature DC fast charging, compatible with NACS (native) and CCS (with adapter), charging from 10% to 80% in less than 30 minutes. Rivian’s new perception stack, featuring 11 cameras, five radars, and a powerful compute platform, will provide enhanced autonomous driving capabilities.
Intentional Design and Usability
Rivian has prioritized adventure, space, and refined touches in the design of the R2 and R3. The R2’s passenger windows and rear powered glass drop fully, creating a unique open-air experience. The R3’s hatch-style design maximizes space while maintaining a sporty, athletic silhouette. Production and Future Plans
Rivian plans to start production of the R2 at its existing Normal, Illinois facility, leveraging its existing infrastructure to reduce costs and risks. This approach is expected to save over $2.25 billion compared to the original plan of launching production at Rivian’s Georgia site. The R2 production is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2026, with the R3 and R3X following.
