The Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, arguably the most famous Rolls-Royce model ever, recently re-enacted its historic 1911 London-Edinburgh Trial, marking 110 years since its original triumph. This legendary vehicle, celebrated for its exceptional engineering, materials, and build quality, continues to affirm Rolls-Royce’s reputation as 'the best car in the world.'
Andrew Ball, Head of Corporate Relations at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, highlighted the significance of this feat, stating, "The Silver Ghost's success in early trials of speed, reliability, and endurance cemented Rolls-Royce's reputation. Repeating the 1911 triumph with Silver Ghost 1701, now a priceless collector's item, underscores its remarkable durability and engineering."
A Historic Re-Enactment
The re-enactment saw Silver Ghost 1701, originally designed as an 'Experimental Speed Car,' re-traverse the route of its 1911 victory. Back then, the car completed the 799-mile round trip between London and Edinburgh locked in top gear, achieving an average speed of 19.59 mph and an unprecedented fuel efficiency of over 24 mpg. This performance earned it a place in automotive history and demonstrated Rolls-Royce's superior engineering.
Following the original trial, the Silver Ghost 1701 demonstrated its unaltered state by reaching 78.2 mph in a half-mile speed test and later became the first Rolls-Royce to exceed 100 mph at Brooklands circuit.
The 2021 Re-Enactment
The 2021 re-enactment was meticulously faithful to the original event. Silver Ghost 1701, still bearing registration R-1075, departed from the Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall, London, on September 5th, 2021, traveling to Edinburgh along the historic Great North Road. As in 1911, the car remained locked in top gear for the entire journey.
Adding to the event's grandeur, 1701 was accompanied by nine other Rolls-Royce Silver Ghosts from the 20-Ghost Club, each impeccably maintained and of a similar vintage. A brand-new Rolls-Royce Ghost, crafted at Goodwood and finished in Tempest Grey, also joined the procession, symbolically linking the marque's storied past with its present and future.
Celebration in Edinburgh
The journey concluded with a grand reception at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Edinburgh on September 6th, 2021. Reflecting on the event, Andrew Ball noted, “Silver Ghost 1701 holds a unique place in Rolls-Royce’s history. Few machines can still perform as they did 110 years ago; this car is a tribute to our predecessors' remarkable craftsmanship. Today, we continue their legacy, ensuring Rolls-Royce cars remain the pinnacle of automotive excellence."
Timeless Appeal of Rolls-Royce
This re-enactment not only celebrated a historic achievement but also showcased the timeless appeal and enduring quality of Rolls-Royce vehicles. For enthusiasts and collectors, events like this reinforce why Rolls-Royce remains a coveted brand, symbolizing luxury, performance, and unparalleled craftsmanship.
