The Bugatti Bolide represents the epitome of automotive engineering, blending the iconic W16 engine with groundbreaking lightweighting techniques to deliver a track driving experience like no other. At the heart of its unparalleled performance lies the technology behind its ability to harness its speed – the largest carbon-carbon brake system ever produced by Brembo.
Crafted to offer an unmatched driving experience, the Bugatti Bolide was conceived as an extreme application that demanded a brake system synonymous with peak performance. Early in the design phase, Bugatti entrusted Italian manufacturer Brembo with the task of creating a braking system that matches the car's uncompromising nature.
From conceptualization to real-world testing, Brembo's racing engineers collaborated closely with Bugatti to overcome the challenges associated with developing a brake system that stands out in both design and performance. After two years of rigorous testing and development, the result is a carbon-carbon brake system that rivals the technology found in LMh/LMDh and Formula 1 cars.
The stopping power of the Bolide is unparalleled. Its bespoke front brakes feature the largest carbon-carbon brake discs ever, incorporating two eight-piston monobloc calipers with four high-performance pads each, paired with remarkable 390x37.5 mm carbon discs. Machined from aluminum alloy and nickel-coated, these calipers ensure optimal braking performance.
At the rear, two six-piston monobloc calipers, also equipped with four high-performance pads, work in tandem with sizable 390x34 mm carbon discs. While slightly smaller than their front counterparts, the rear brake system matches the standards of the LMDh racing class, showcasing Bugatti's commitment to delivering unrivaled track performance.
Mario Almondo, Chief Operating Officer of Brembo Performance, commented, “Developing the brake system for the Bugatti Bolide was a unique and very exciting challenge for the Performance Division of Brembo. We had to reengineer the entire system to cope with the incredible yet demanding characteristics and power of the car."
The use of carbon compounds similar to those in Formula 1 not only reduced the overall weight of the system but also ensured exceptional thermal conductivity for superior heat dissipation during intense braking, preventing brake fade and offering consistent performance even under extreme conditions.
However, the Bolide's brake system is more than just calipers, pads, and discs; it represents a holistic approach to engineering precision. Bespoke master cylinders and specially formulated fluid further refine the Bolide's dynamics, ensuring every component works seamlessly together.
Bugatti's collaboration with Brembo extended to the development of the brake air duct, optimizing airflow to precisely meet the needs of the cutting-edge brake system. This strategic enhancement significantly improved brake system cooling, essential for managing the energy unleashed by the Bugatti W16 during intense track sessions.
The meticulous development process, spanning two years of simulations, dynamometer sessions, and track analyses, ensured that the Bolide's brake system can withstand its exhilarating speeds while maintaining safety and security. Even in challenging driving conditions, such as wet surfaces, the Bolide's brake system shines, thanks to meticulous fine-tuning and adaptation.
The Bugatti Bolide's groundbreaking brake system stands as a testament to the relentless pursuit of automotive excellence, pushing the boundaries of performance and engineering innovation.
